The Department of English, in collaboration with XERC, organized a Certificate Course in Spoken English for the students of Govt Upper Primary School, Lalya ka baas which was adopted by the department under Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan, from 18 July to 6 August 2022. Ananay Vishwas, Garima Sharma, Khyati Kapoor and Kanishk Sharma from BA Hons English II taught the basic skills of the English language to the students of classes VI to VIII through learning activities and games. Rev Fr Dr A Rex Angelo SJ, Principal of St Xavier’s College, Jaipur congratulated the team and encouraged them to participate in more social activities. The students of the school participated with great vigor and were awarded certificates after the assessment. Rev Fr Dr Arokya Swamy SJ, Manager motivated the students to continue their journey towards greater knowledge and Vice Principal Rev Fr Dr Raymond Cherubin SJ congratulated the department for conducting the course.

The Proscenium

The Department of English organized an intra-department competition The Proscenium: Celebrating Shakespeare. The students of the department performed scenes from Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, King Lear, The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, As You Like It and Macbeth. Rev Fr Dr A Rex Angelo SJ, Principal graced the occasion with his presence and also shared some nuances related to theatre, while also encouraging the students to participate in literary events. Dr Rama Hirawat, Head of the department introduced the event and motivated the students. The judges for the event were: Dr Atiqa Kelsy, Dean, Arts and Humanities and Mr Rohan Thomas Cherian, Assistant Professor Department of English. The following students were awarded:

1. Best Actor Male- Raghav Arora (Romeo)

2. Best Actor Female- Bhavika John Ratnam  (Rosalynd)

3. Best Actress – Supporting – Lakshita Sharma (Kent)

4. Best Play- As You Like It and Julius Caesar (Tie)

Perceptions 2022

On 14 October 2022, the Department of English, St. Xavier's College, Jaipur organised their annual presentation competition, "Perceptions". This year's edition was titled "Second Look at your Favourite Book". The event was held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and saw a participation of 18 students from the Department of English. Mr. Cyrus Edwin, one of our own reputed alumni, was invited to judge the participants. After a thought-out discussion among the professors and Mr. Edwin, the results were announced during the closing ceremony. The first position was bagged by Vasudha Sharma. The next spot was shared by Yashasvi Jangir and Ramya Pandya, who were followed by Ananay Vishwas as the 2nd runner-up. The event was the culmination of the meticulous efforts of the students and the teachers alike and turned out to be a great success. 

Rev Fr Dr Sebastian Anand SJ First Memorial Lecture

The Department of English of St. Xavier’s College, Jaipur, organized the First Rev Fr Dr Sebastian Anand SJ First Memorial Lecture on 7th November 2022. The event was initiated with the blessings of Rev Fr Dr Arokya Swamy SJ who also elaborated on the contributions of Rev Fr Sebastian Anand. Thereafter, Rev Fr Dr A Rex Angelo SJ, Principal, addressed the students and motivated them towards academic excellence and integrity in life. This was followed by Reminiscences – Walking down the memory lane where Dr Mahua M Bose, Dean of Academics, Dr Dharamveer Yadav – Dean Students’ Welfare and, Ms Aparna Joshi – President of Xavier’s College Alumni addressed the gathering and shared their memories of Rev Fr Sebastian Anand. Thereafter, the invited speaker Rev Fr Dr V Gilburt Camillus SJ Secretary, Arul Anandar College, Madurai, Tamil Nadu gave an illuminating lecture on the topic - Nadine Gordimer – A Champion of Freedom and Equality. This was followed by the felicitation of the Guests and the Announcement of the Endowment Fund in Memory of Rev Fr Dr Sebastian Anand SJ. The day ended with a special vote of thanks by Dr Akanksha Johar.

 


Author Session & Book Release

The department of English, in collaboration with The Great Indian Book Tour organised a book launch, on 17 September 2022, at 11:30 AM in the College Conference Room. The book titled, Lost Chirp of the Morning Sparrow, by Roshan Raj Mehta, is the second book from The Flyborn Series, a trilogy based on a fictional world named RsamRock Islands that revolves around the journey of a butterfly. The book was launched by the Dignitaries present, Rev Fr Dr Raymond Cherubin SJ, Vice-Principal, St. Xavier’s College, Jaipur, Dr Atiqa Kelsy, Dean – Arts and Humanities, Dr Rama Hirawat, Head – Department of English, the author himself, Mr Shubham Tiwari, Mr Prashant Gupta and members of the Department. The book launch was followed by a tete-a-tete with Mr Shubham Tiwari, a writer, film critic and independent literary consultant. Tiwari took the audience on a journey into the writer’s mind by asking pertinent question about the storyline, the inspiration behind the trilogy, why a trilogy, the idea behind the intriguing title, and similar questions. The conversation sparked greater interest in the audience and invited more questions from them about the book thereby making the session more interactive and livelier. The session was enlightening and inspired many budding authors to follow in the footsteps of the author.
